George Herbert Walker Bush
George Herbert Walker Bush was 41st President of the US, starting in 1989. To distinguish Bush from his son, George W. Bush, his nicknames later on were "Bush 41", "Bush the Elder", or "George Bush Sr." He was the last President to serve in WWII. Collapse of the Soviet Union occurred during his Presidency. His famous line "Read my lips 'No new taxes'" back fired on him when taxes were raised. They passed the American Disability Act during his Presidency also. He also signed the Immigration Act of 1990, which allowed for more immigration. One of Bush's major initiatives was 1,000 Points of Light, which called for Americans to volunteer in their communities to solve community problems. In 1990 the Points of Light was created out of this movement. |
Bill Clinton
Bill Clinton was 42nd President of US starting in 1993. During his Presidency, Clinton presided over peace time economic expansion. Clinton signed North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), this created a trading agreement between Canada, United States, and Mexico. Clinton tried to pass a National Healthcare Reform Act but he failed at this attempt. Clinton did pass the Welfare Reform and State Children's Health Insurance Program that provides health insurance to uninsured children in working families who make too much money to qualify Medicaide. Clinton was impeached for perjury and obstruction of justice, that was brought about due to a scandal involving a White House intern. Clinton left office with one of the highest approval ratings of any US President. |
